COMMUNION SUNDAY

Jesus as the bread of life. Teaching on Holy Communion.

What does it mean for us to eat this bread and have this life, in practical terms?

It means having a different way of looking at the world which changes the way we life and move in the world.

It means five things:

  1. A real relationship with Jesus means to have a radical openness to God. Some Christians have airtight theologies that pretend to know what the Lord is going to do. A living relationship with Jesus means we are open to him surprising us.
  2. Jesus used bread and the cup to put our physical bodies and lives at the center of what he is doing. Jesus touches the whole person, our real needs, not just some disembodied spirituality. Our finances. Our health. Jesus put the Lord’s prayer at the middle of his sermon on the mount and “Give us this day our daily bread” at the center of this prayer. Aramaic: Lachmo hablan d’sunkonan yamano.
  3. Nature is not just physical. There are spiritual forces out there. Spiritual warfare is real. We are experiencing that with Woody’s heart attack and the challenges we are facing. a
  4. Jesus wants us to experience his very presence (bread and cup) at a heart level, not just know “about” him. Not just getting the right answers on a Bible test. And we are to share that experience of Jesus with others
  5. He comes to us in the bread and cup and also is coming to us as Soon Coming King to make everything right. We are to work on the side of his power, subverting the status quo and those forces that align against him, for the victory, in the end, is for those on the Lord’s team.
